Stage Review

Twentieth Century (2004 - 2004)

Details Opening Date: Mar 25, 2004; Lead Performances: Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche; Director: Walter Bobbie

Madcap banter among glamorous rail travelers doesn't carry the same fizz it did when Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur debuted their screwball comedy back in the 1930s; as a pompous theater producer and the high-maintenance actress he loved, lost, and woos again, Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche don't spark the way John Barrymore and Carole Lombard do in Howard Hawks' matchless 1934 movie version. What this fitful Roundabout revival has going for it, instead, is Heche's fascinatingly itchy, comically histrionic performance as a stage diva -- and divine sets and lighting. (212-719-1300)
