LONG SHOT Penn may star in ''King's Men'' remake

Having just won an Oscar, Sean Penn may now run for office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures wants to draft him to play Willie Stark, the populist demagogue politician who is the protagonist of ''All the King's Men,'' in a remake of the 1949 movie. Like that film, which won an Oscar for star Broderick Crawford, the remake is based on the classic 1946 Robert Penn Warren novel that was in turn inspired by Depression-era Louisiana governor and senator Huey Long. Former Bill Clinton adviser James Carville, who knows a thing or two about charismatic candidates and Southern politics, is an executive producer of the movie. Oscar-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (''Schindler's List'') will write and direct the film.
