In this lighthearted homegirl epic set in the fictional California town of Lava Landing, the mamacitas wear mini-faldas, attend Tupperware parties, and cast spells. The men succumb to those spells, play in mariachi bands, and nurse tequila hangovers with big bowls of menudo. Crammed with bright Loteria cards, maps, and letters, the volume bursts with color and high spirits. It hardly matters that the meandering, good-natured plot -- incorporating a few troubled love affairs, a ghost, and the romantic anguish of a transvestite hairdresser -- takes you nowhere.
