In his more exuberant moments — he does have them — Carradine predicts that Kill Bill could send his career ''through the roof.'' There are other signs of a Carradine resurgence: Season 1 of Kung Fu has just been released on DVD, and Death Race 2000, now hailed as a cult classic, has been optioned for a remake by Tom Cruise's production company, with Cruise himself possibly to play Carradine's role. But Carradine knows both Hollywood and himself too well to start writing the John Wayne, hero-rides-into-the-sunset ending quite yet.

''Right now, the rest of my life is a blank page,'' he says. He shakes his head and stubs an unfiltered cigarette into an already overflowing ashtray. ''The interesting thing is, I don't think I've hardly started. And f---, I'm on Social Security, but I'm getting a rebirth.''
