What's a girl's ultimate fashion fantasy? According to 13 Going on 30 costume designer Susie DeSanto, ''Waking up in a fabulous New York apartment and walking into a huge closet with all the shoes and clothes in the world.'' For 13's Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner), the dream-closet concept was more than a pretty prop. ''We told Jenna's story by the choices she was making in the closet,'' DeSanto explains. ''As a ruthless, powerful magazine [editor], she was hard-edged -- Versace, Dolce & Gabbana.'' But to mark the teenage Jenna's takeover of adult Jenna's body, DeSanto went for looks ''that were more who her authentic person was: sweet, fun, and feminine.''
Like the happy polka-dot dress by Etro (above) that Jenna wears for her Fifth Avenue shopping spree. ''That's a great fashion film moment,'' says DeSanto. ''Something that could end up lasting through time.'' At the very least, the frock will help the current polka-dot trend stay hot through summer, as will the cream Nanette Lepore coat seen on 13 posters.
As for Alias fans accustomed to Garner in pin-striped suits and skintight vinyl, they'll get a glimpse of the star's softer side. ''All of a sudden she's wearing chiffon and lace and all these really girly things. It was nice to see her do something different.'' Garner apparently agreed. Says DeSanto: ''She wanted to take it all home!''
