''When Tobey wasn't going to do it, well, that was a hard time,'' says Dunst. ''I think it really needed to be Tobey, because that's Peter Parker, and he is Spider-Man, so it was scary.'' Raimi, who was bogged down in preproduction, was understandably upset: ''I didn't have faith. I didn't think Tobey was going to be in it.'' Then, Maguire wavered again. There were conversations between the actor, his doctors, and the filmmakers, and a short time later he was back.
''At first I wasn't sure about the stunts,'' admits Maguire. ''There were a lot, and it was pretty complicated. [But] it ended up being not so bad. The harnesses were better, the wires were smoother, and the stunts, I think, were easier.''
