''I can't believe I got in another accident,'' said Billy Joel on Sunday afternoon, after his third car crash in two years. According to the Associated Press, the pop star plowed his 1967 Citroen into a house in Bayville, Long Island, near his home. No one else was involved in the accident, in which Joel suffered only a cut finger. Police said there was no evidence that the crash was alcohol- or drug-related.
''There were slick road conditions and a curve in the road. He veered off the road and hit the house,'' Nassau County Police spokesperson Joan Eames told the New York Daily News. The car plowed through the shrubbery and damaged the wall of the house and its siding, the Daily News reports. The homeowner, Maria Dono, returned home from a trip to the grocery to find her home had become a crash site swarming with police and firemen. ''I'm 94 years old and I still drive,'' said Dono, who was unfamiliar with Joel's music. ''I've never had an accident.''
Unlike Dono, the 54-year-old Piano Man has had three single-car crashes recently. In June 2002, after escaping serious injury in a crash in nearby Easthampton, he checked himself into an alcohol rehab clinic. In January 2003, he crashed his Mercedes into a tree and also emerged relatively unscathed, though he was briefly hospitalized. Maybe it's time for Joel to act like a big shot and hire a chauffeur.
