DESIGNING MAN NBC is giving Yip his own show

All About

Trading Spaces

Like his former colleague, carpenter Ty Pennington, ''Trading Spaces''' Vern Yip is seeking a higher plane. The popular designer and architect on the TLC hit is trading up and moving to network TV. He tells Louisiana's Baton Rouge Advocate that he's moving to NBC to host ''Design Intervention,'' where, unlike the $1,000 renovations he and his fellow designers perform on ''Trading Spaces,'' he'll get to oversee lavish remodeling projects that transform entire houses, inside and out, including furniture and landscaping. '''Trading Spaces' was an amazing opportunity for me," he says. ''It opened a lot of doors for me and allowed me to travel across the country and to meet a lot of great people. Now NBC has offered me my own show.''

''Design Intervention,'' which begins taping in June for a September debut, sounds a lot like Pennington's primetime home improvement show, ABC's ''Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,'' in which he and a massive work crew thoroughly renovate a house in just one week. On ''Design Intervention,'' however, Yip will have two weeks. ''We want to get families involved,'' he says. ''We're looking for those homes where they've started a project, like a new addition, and thought they could do it on their own, but they never really finished it.'' The 34-year-old is finishing another project of his own, a design book, which will also come out in September.
