Penance Soiree (2004)

Details Release Date: May 04, 2004; Lead Performance: The Icarus Line

This art-punk behemoth of an album opens and closes with flourishes of rock classicism (the Nirvana-style thunderclap ''Up Against the Wall Motherf -- -ers'' and the horny Britpop homage ''Party the Baby Off''). But in between, Icarus Line reject songwriting convention in favor of guitar noise and self-immolating grooves. Radio programmers might end up throwing the disc at the studio wall in disgust, but avant-rock fiends should rejoice.
