Anyone seeking extra helpings of the sublime steel guitar work on Loretta Lynn's new album can get plenty on this debut from some Jack White proteges. Loretta wouldn't approve of some of the language in the tortured duets between the front-spouses. And there's a costume-ball quality to Northerners getting Southern gothic that might make alt-country purists, well, blanch. But much of the admittedly mopey material works, and that gorgeously spooky steel trumps all concerns.
