The Must List

The Must List

10 things EW loves: Week of May 7, 2004

TV
1. SERIES FINALES
As Angel joins Buffy in the Joss Whedon RIP club, another show calls it a day too: something about six pals who hang out in a coffee shop...

BOOKS
2. THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB, BY KAREN JOY FOWLER
No bonnets, just lots of spot-on social commentary on our wild and twisted modern ways.

MUSIC
3. A FOREIGN SOUND, CAETANO VELOSO
The Brazilian Bob Dylan covers Nirvana, David Byrne, and other cool cats on this beautiful album of English-language standards.

BOOKS
4. DOONESBURY
Garry Trudeau's comic strip takes a compelling turn when B.D. loses a leg while serving with his Army unit in Iraq. Biting, smart, relevant — in other words, classic Doonesbury.

MUSIC
5. JOHNNY CASH MONKEY
Desperado/Why don't you check out this website [www.apsv04. dsl.pipex.com/desper ado.swf]/And see a monkey sing Johnny/While ridin' a horse.

TV
6. WILLIAM SHATNER on ABC's 'The Practice'
Beam us up, Scotty! 'Cause Captain Kirk manages to out-camp legal sleazeball James Spader and still infuse his not-all-there attorney Danny Crane with depth!

MOVIE
7. KILL BILL VOL. 2
Every now and then, we feel moved to stick up for some poor, unknown movie that no one's ever heard of. We're generous like that.

MUSIC
8. THE HIP HOP BOX
From ''Rapper's Delight'' to 50 Cent via Salt 'N' Pepa and Queen Latifah, this four-disc set celebrating 25 years of rhymes is da bomb.

TV
9. BBC America's 'STATE OF PLAY'
We eat up great political thrillers almost as shamelessly as we do posh British accents, so of course we're mad for this miniseries from across the pond!

MOVIE
10. 13 GOING ON 30
Jennifer Garner, you do goofy-awkward teen just as deftly as serious-stealthy spy. And that makes you pretty darn swell.
