George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser

CURIOUS GEORGE: Nature boy Fraser gawks with the animals

Movie Review

George of the Jungle (1997)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Rated: PG; Genre: Comedy; With: Thomas Haden Church, Brendan Fraser and Leslie Mann

Disney shaped Jay Ward’s willfully aimless cartoon-sketch show into a coherent live-action feature by simply contriving some jungle love: Noble savage Fraser goes cuckoo for Ursula (Mann), a gal with Jane Goodall’s heart and Jane Fonda’s cheekbones. The sappy romance gums up the TV series’ slyness, but the film nonetheless retains some slapstick foolery and snappy dialogue, and Fraser handsomely captures George’s broad-jawed oafishness. Plus, armed with your magical remote, you can fast-forward through the schmaltz and head straight to John Cleese’s gorilla farts.
