Shabbily filmed, thoroughly harmless Official Product. The weenyboppers who make up the Spice Girls’ core audience won’t care that this rips off A Hard Day’s Night down to its knickers, and the Spices flaunt a girl-power camaraderie that’s shallow but hard to resist. The analogue here is really the cruddy, engaging cash-ins that followed A Hard Day’s Night, from Seaside Swingers to The Monkees. None of those, however, ended with the band rallying around the hospital bed of a buddy giving birth. That’s kitsch, but progress.
