Movie Review

The Devil's Advocate (1997)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Rated: R; Genres: Drama, Mystery and Thriller; With: Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves

You think you have the boss from hell. Pity poor Kevin Lomax (Reeves), a hotshot young attorney who finds himself working for a mysterious New York power broker named John Milton (Pacino) — a.k.a. Satan — in The Devil's Advocate. Director Taylor Hackford (Against All Odds) and screenwriters Jonathan Lemkin and Tony Gilroy have devised a slick, entertaining morality tale — but the real craftsman here is Pacino, who delivers his operatic performance with lip-smacking relish. And thanks to video, you can replay and savor the film's fall-from-grace notes: cameos by Don King and New York sen. Al D’Amato as Satan’s buddies and creature creator Rick Baker’s briefly seen demons. B+
