HANDS ACROSS AMERICA: Travolta and Thompson hold their marriage together

Movie Review

Primary Colors (1998)

Details Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Drama; With: John Travolta

John Travolta as 1992 presidential candidate Jack Stanton as Bill Clinton is one of those thrilling confluences in pop culture that rewards audiences for thinking the worst about politicians and the best about movie stars. Adapting Joe Klein’s roman a clef of the same name, ferociously witty screenwriter Elaine May and her smooth old compatriot in comedy, director Mike Nichols, have made a zingy drama and have staffed it well: Travolta gets the fractured pol down beautifully, and is abetted by Emma Thompson, Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Larry Hagman, and Adrian Lester in the role of narrator and one-man Greek chorus.
