Birdee Pruitt (Sandra Bullock), former Texas high school beauty queen, learns on national TV that her husband and her best friend are having an affair. What a promising setup! The film sinks deeper than "Speed 2," though, the minute the wronged woman packs up her daughter (Mae Whitman) and returns home to her own quirky mother (Gena Rowlands) and the hometown boy (Harry Connick Jr.) she spurned in her youth. The pond is so shallow in this wan romance that there’s no room for anything to float.
