Brad Pitt's Achilles slayed the competition at the box office this weekend, but ''Troy'' wasn't able to defeat ''Van Helsing'''s debut from last week.
''Troy'' grossed $45.6 million according to studio estimates, falling short of the $51.8 million ''Van Helsing'' earned in its opening weekend. Blame ''Troy'''s long running time (2 hours and 40 minutes) and its R rating for that. Still, ''Troy'' was able to gross $100 million worldwide in its first three days (and it broke the record for biggest opening in Greece!).
''Van Helsing,'' meanwhile, felt the brunt of its new competition -- not to mention its hideously bad reviews -- plummeting 61 percent to only $20.1 million in its second weekend. After 10 days, the Hugh Jackman action drama has earned $84.5 million.
The teen comedy ''Mean Girls'' slipped only 26 percent in its third weekend to $10.1 million, easily beating the weekend's other new entry, ''Breakin' All the Rules.'' The Jamie Foxx comedy, which only played at about 1,300 theaters, tied with ''Man on Fire'' for fourth place with $5.3 million. Expect a big box-office shakeup on Wednesday with the long-awaited arrival of ''Shrek 2.''
