Suicaine Gratifaction, Paul Westerberg

PIANO MAN Westerberg and the keyboard he rode in on

Music Review

Suicaine Gratifaction (1999)

EW's GRADE
A-

Details Lead Performance: Paul Westerberg; Genre: Rock

From the naked slap of the snare drum on "Best Thing That Never Happened" to the achingly unadorned vocals on "Born for Me," the former Replacements leader returns to basement basics on this loose and lovely lo-fi effort, (thankfully) underproduced by Don Was. Alternating rave-up rockers with wistful piano ballads about doomed romantics, ''Gratification'' is a welcome reminder of why Westerberg's songwriting first provided such a jolt.
