This sequel to Buffa's gripping debut thriller, ''The Defense,'' pulls soul-searching criminal defense attorney Joseph Antonelli out of self-imposed exile and back into the courtroom to prosecute a colleague for the murder of his well-insured wife, a standard plot that's heightened by emotionally driven twists and Antonelli's unflinching narration. An oddly heartening denouement includes one too many thematic contrivances, but Buffa's spare observation, crackling dialogue, and shadowy circle of criminals, lawyers, and lovers keep you riveted.
