Poseidon

(2006)

FAMILIAR FACES From left: Emmy Rossum, Mia Maestro, Mike Vogel, Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Jacinda Barrett; plus: Josh Lucas, Andre Braugher, Kevin Dillon, Freddy Rodriguez, Stacy ''Fergie'' Ferguson (of Black Eyed Peas)

UH-OH! In this remake of 1972's The Poseidon Adventure, the formula is the same: big wave, capsized cruise ship, motley band of survivors. Alas, no Shelley Winters.

DISASTROUS DIALOGUE ''There's nothing fair about who lives and who dies.'' —Robert Ramsey (Russell)

SAVING THE DAY The survivors' unlikely leader is professional gambler Dylan Johns (Lucas), who tries to lead the others — a father and daughter (Russell and Rossum), a young mom (Barrett), a stowaway (Maestro), a suicidal gay man (Richard Dreyfuss), and one of the ship's waiters (Rodriguez) — to safety.

AFTERSHOCKS Will the remake please the original's vast cult of fans? Will it finally make Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, Glory Road) into an A-list star? Will director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, The Perfect Storm) displace James Cameron as king of the ocean?

WHY YOU SHOULD SEE IT It's the same story you loved the first time, only with better special effects and a prettier cast.
