Grandfather Clause

Walter Cronkite may cover elections for MTV. The elder statesman and the network are both open to the idea of putting Cronkite on the air

Eighty-seven-year-old former CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite's newest coworkers may be named Sway and Gideon. Cronkite, who will appear on a ''Choose or Lose'' special Tuesday night, might continue his association with the cable network through coverage of this year's political conventions and election night, according to Newsday. ''How much I participate in the remaining election year is, I think, just kind of up for grabs,'' Cronkite told Newsday. ''If they call upon me to be the senior citizen, I'll be the senior citizen.''

Cronkite declined to tell the newspaper if he'd ever actually seen MTV's youth-oriented programming. His association with MTV began because he's still under contract with MTV's corporate sister CBS, Newsday reported. Rumors of a guest spot on ''Viva La Bam'' are still unconfirmed.
