Get Bruce!, Bruce Vilanch, ...

WRITER'S DOC ''Bruce!'' flatteringly profiles Vilanch (here with Goldberg)

Movie Review

Get Bruce! (1999)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Rated: R; Genre: Documentary; With: Bruce Vilanch

Bruce Vilanch, a large, furry man with a fondness for message T-shirts (sample: ''My other body's in the shop'') and bold eyeglasses who writes comedy material for many of Hollywood's top funny stars, gets to display a portion of his wardrobe and his one-liners in Get Bruce!, an affectionate puff profile.

Although Andrew Kuehn's documentary is just one step above a home movie in content, depth, and technical quality, it coasts a long way on goodwill and good shtick from such FOBs as Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, and Bette Midler. (Brief shots of the writer consulting with Steven Seagal do not, alas, segue into a cascade of appreciative gags from the ponytailed actor.) As is so often the case, it's Mom -- Hennie Vilanch -- who steals the show as she reflects on her adored son's unusual talents.
