Buchanan's vibrant longtime hero Britt Montero is AWOL in this new series starring the comparatively flat Miami police sergeant Craig Burch -- a cop so consumed by his work that he misses the birth of his third child (''caught a triple homicide that night and was tied up until the next morning''). But the mysteries, as always, thrill: A woman is convinced her ex-husband did not get blown up 12 years ago while tinkering with his car. A serial killer targets elderly women. Buchanan needs to work on Burch, but not on her forensic details, which dazzle.
