Home Page, Justin Hall

'HOME' BOY Hall is a man of his words

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Rated: Unrated; Genre: Documentary; With: Doug Block and Justin Hall

Documentarian Doug Block, a ruminative baby boomer trying to untangle the implications of the World Wide Web, nearly suffered input overload three years ago when he met Justin Hall, a wired philosopher, then 21 -- part nerd, part communications visionary -- who maintains an addictively garrulous, uncensored, autobiographical website.

Justin's compulsive online confessions inspired Block to create his own home page -- the better to sample the strange powers and dislocations of virtual intimacy. Home Page -- a thoughtful, bemused film with narrative charms akin to those of Ross McElwee's self-referential ''Sherman's March'' -- scrolls through some challenging issues of human discourse in an age of electronic sci-fi made real. Whether or not you chafe at the speed with which the filmmaker downloads his middle-aged musings may depend on the speed of your own connection to dot-com culture.
