Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: Reissues

For a brief, strange moment in the late '70s and early '80s, disco and the avant-garde collided in NYC, spawning a sound that's suddenly trendy again (see bands like !!!). ZE Records was the premier outlet for this hybrid, and Mutant collects 25 tracks released by the recently relaunched label between '78 and '83. Some of it sounds like it would've been more fun live, but there's an unmistakable joy and excitement that run through tunes by artists like Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and Don Armando's 2nd Av. Rhumba Band, whoever they were.
