Audaciously entertaining. Mario Van Peebles sports an attitude of electric, hungry-eyed defiance to play his father, Melvin Van Peebles, during the making of ''Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song'' (1971). Perhaps no movie has demonstrated so graphically that a film-maker is really a politician, a hustler, and an artist, in that order.
