There's a self congratulatory mode of indie coolness in which the nuttier the characters act, the more glibly inconsequential the movie becomes. In Lisa Krueger's Committed, Joline (Heather Graham), a comely New York rock-club manager, has such deep and abiding faith in her marital vows that when Carl (Luke Wilson), her emotional slowpoke of a husband, ditches her for the Tex-Mex border, she treats the betrayal not as a rejection but as a mistake. She's committed to getting the bum back, even if it kills him.
A blithe female revenge fantasy turned on its head, Committed serves up Joline, in her blond rasta ringlets and red leather pants, as a mad stalker for love, standing by her man and busting his chops at the same time. Graham, too savvy to let her oversize doe eyes speak for her, gives Joline's lunacy a winning common-sensical sweetness. The movie, however, is an inert screwball cartoon, a celebration of monogamy as fashion statement. C-
