50 First Dates (2004)

Details Release Date: Jun 15, 2004; DVD Release Date: Jun 15, 2004; Movie Rated: PG-13; Genres: Comedy, Romance; With: Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler; Distributor: Columbia Pictures; More

Barrymore is adorably innocent as Lucy, an art teacher who has lost her short-term memory, and Sandler is charming as Henry, a hopelessly romantic veterinarian living in Hawaii. But neither can elevate 50 First Dates, a dreadful farce, featuring vomiting walruses, a one-eyed pothead father, and a ''juiced up'' hobbit (Sean Astin). The endearing premise -- making someone fall in love with you every day -- gets lost in the muddle. EXTRAS The overly self-congratulatory (and sans-Sandler) commentary by Barrymore and director Peter Segal is an uninformative waste of time. But the making-of docs, which include amusing outtakes, are more interesting than the actual film. The highlight: an instructional featurette on Hawaiian pidgin, after which you'll know to cringe when the locals call you a ''futless haole.''
