Blazing Saddles broke new ground when it was released in 1974. ''It also broke wind,'' quips director Mel Brooks, referring to the notorious campfire scene in which a group of hungry cowboys blow off some steam. The insanely hilarious farce about a black sheriff sent to save a besieged Western town in 1874 is an equal-opportunity offender, but everyone's in on the joke, and Brooks gets classic performances from a brilliant cast.

EXTRAS Some bonus scenes will look familiar to those who grew up with the sanitized television version, and Brooks' commentary doesn't even run the length of the movie. Fortunately, the look-back doc is a blast, chronicling casting what-ifs (cowriter Richard Pryor as Sheriff Bart? John Wayne as the Waco Kid?) and the genius of Harvey Korman as Hedy Lamarr -- that's ''Hedley!''
