AGE 41
MUSTWORTHINESS What do two of Broadway's most buzzworthy
but dissimilar shows -- audience pleaser ''Wicked'' and critics'
darling ''Assassins'' -- have in common? Director Mantello (''Take Me
Out''), who just won his second consecutive Tony for helming
''Assassins.''
MURDER, HE WROTE ''It's 'Assassins,' not 'Puppies and Kittens,' so a portion of the audience is not gonna go with it,''
says Mantello of the Sondheim show, which features Lee Harvey
Oswald, John Hinckley, and others crooning. ''If you read reviews
of the original [1991] production, it was accused of being
unpatriotic. But the world caught up. The reasons it caught up
are tragic.''
CAREER HIGH ''Working as an actor in 'Angels in America.''' It was such a high, he went out on it -- to focus
exclusively on directing.
NEXT A revival of ''Glengarry Glen Ross.''
