'Sweet' Lowdown Kudos, EW, for the article by Tom Sinclair ('''Sweet Sweetback' to the Future'') on the film legend Melvin Van Peebles and his son Mario. Melvin has inspired not only black cinema but cinema as a whole. JOEL KIRK joelkirk@sbcglobal.net Milpitas, Calif.
Mob Seen
After years of reading EW, I've learned to skip articles on my favorite shows or anticipated movies for fear of running into spoilers. Now even Monitor isn't safe (News & Notes)! why on earth would you print a huge ''Sopranos'' spoiler right there, without any warning? with the largest picture on the page, it's awfully hard to miss. 'Wicked' Good
In her article on the Tonys, Mary Kaye Schilling claimed that ''many critics rightfully yawned'' at the musical ''Wicked'' (News & Notes). Any critic who yawned at ''Wicked'' was not paying attention. Finally, a musical story line that people could take seriously, with soaring music and voices to rival any heard on a Broadway stage. But, of course, the critics know best. As usual, the public is wrong. Thirty years down the road, productions of ''Wicked'' will still be mounted, while ''Avenue Q'' will be a footnote in musical comedy history. and, yes, I liked that show, too. CORRECTIONS: In our ''Casting the Sex Pistols Movie'' box, a photo identified as Glen Matlock was actually of Steve Jones (Music). A Sound Bite joke about the Olsen twins on VH1's ''Best Week Ever'' should have been attributed to actor-comedian Doug Benson (Television). ''Scary Movie 3'' was directed by David Zucker (DVD & Video).
