EW's GRADE

Details Release Date: May 04, 2004; Lead Performance: French Kicks

Previously lumped in with the NYC post-punk explosion, this Brooklyn band has moved on to a style of a later vintage: new-wave pop that doles out melancholy, grandeur, and groove in equal doses. Lead moper Nick Stumpf has Moz's wry romanticism down pat, while the group makes like Joy Division on an espresso binge. A bit retro, for sure, but the Reagan-era references feel more fond than forced.
