After a bitter legal battle, Warner Music Group announced June 14 an agreement to buy Madonna, 45, out of their Maverick Records joint venture. No details were revealed.

RECOVERING

In the recuperating zone? Britney Spears, 22, has canceled her summer Onyx Hotel Tour after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on June 10. The singer injured herself taking a tumble while shooting a music video for ''Outrageous'' with rapper Snoop Dogg, 32. She's immobile for the next six weeks.... Newly svelte model Anna Nicole Smith, 36, is in stable condition after falling off a boat and fracturing two ribs while filming in the Caribbean last month.

CANCELLATIONS

Citing ''mental and physical exhaustion,'' the Vines backed out of their support spot on Incubus' North American summer tour, slated to kick off on June 24 in Atlantic City.

COURTS

Actress Brigitte Bardot, 69, was convicted June 10 in France of inciting racial hatred for portraying Muslims in a negative light in her outspoken book ''A Scream in the Silence'' and ordered to pay a $6,000 fine. She has previously denied the accusation.... Troubled singer Courtney Love, 39, turned herself in on felony assault charges for allegedly battering L.A. musician Kristin King with a bottle and a metal flashlight at Love's ex-boyfriend Jim Barber's house on April 25. Love, who is out on $55,000 bail, has postponed her summer tour to address her ''frivolous, malicious complaints and legal matters.'' She is scheduled to resume her tour in Japan in August.... Amusing Diversions, Inc. sued rapper DMX (ne Earl Simmons), 33, on June 9 in NYC for breach of contract. The corporation is asking for $90,000, claiming that DMX failed to actively promote Dogwear, Inc., a canine clothing line, as stated in their agreement, and that he promoted a competitor's products instead. Reps for DMX did not return calls for comment.... On June 9, rapper Eminem, 31, won a preliminary victory in his feud with The Source when a federal court held the magazine in contempt for publishing the complete lyrics of two of the rapper's early controversial recordings. The Source says it will ''be victorious in the end.''... Acting legend Elizabeth Taylor, 72, has reached an out-of-court settlement with Willem Van Muyden, her former gardener, who claimed he had been fired after refusing the sexual advances of her butler. The gardener had sued Taylor in 2002, claiming she owed him $294,000. The undisclosed terms were ''amicably reached'' in the first week of June, according to Van Muyden's lawyer.
