Despite what she calls ''the big stink'' about her impulsive and quickly annulled marriage to a childhood pal earlier this year, Britney Spears rushed happily into matrimony again with backup dancer Kevin Federline; in fact, she's the one who popped the question. That's one of the revelations of the cover story in the upcoming issue of People magazine (which hits newsstands on Friday). The story consists of an interview with the happy couple, who announced their engagement last Friday after two months of courtship.
Spears says of her Vegas wedding in January, ''That thing was a total ugh. I was not in love at all.'' Still, despite the worldwide fuss over her 55-hour marriage to Jason Allen Alexander, she said to herself, ''This is my life and I don't care what people think. I'm going to get married [to Federline]. I'm in love with him.''
She says she broached the subject of marriage during a recent flight from Ireland to New York. ''All of a sudden I said, 'What if you want to get married?' And I kind of went from there to asking him if he would marry me," she recalls. "And I said no," Federline says. ''I was taken by surprise. I thought the guy was supposed to ask the girl. So a couple of minutes went by and then I asked her.'' He adds, ''I wasn't really thinking about asking her right away, but I did without reservation. I'd known for a while that she's the one.'' Spears says she's known the same thing. ''My other loves were like puppy love. They were like practice for the real thing. This is just deeper,'' she says. ''I kissed a bunch of frogs and finally found my prince.''
The singer is sporting a five-carat diamond mounted on two platinum bands, an engagement ring that she apparently picked out and purchased herself. She says she's enlisted the help of a wedding planner (no wee-hours vows in Vegas this time), who brought over 10 rings for her to choose from. ''Even though it's a really big diamond, it's still simple and elegant,'' she says of the ring she picked.
The 22-year-old tells People she's not pregnant, though she'd eventually like to have ''four or five'' kids. Of course, Federline, 26, has already gotten a head start in that department. He and his ex-girlfriend, ''Moesha'' actress Shar Jackson, have a two-year old daughter (whom Spears has yet to meet), and Jackson is about to deliver their second child, a boy. Jackson famously told TV's ''Extra'' that she blames her ex, not Spears, for their breakup, though she says she has nothing to say to Spears. ''The only thing we need to discuss is, you know, when she's ready to babysit.''
