Pilot Error

Jack Black plans reality competition for aspiring TV producers -- He's planning ''Channel 101'' for FX, a show that would submit five-minute minipilots to audience votes

Think you can create better programming than what's currently on TV? Here's your chance. Get ready for ''Channel 101,'' a reality series that FX has commissioned from Jack Black, based on the monthly competitions that the ''School of Rock'' star presides over at Hollywood's Cinespace. At the live ''Channel 101'' events, aspiring TV producers screen their five-minute, homemade minipilots for potential TV series. The audience votes for their favorites, and winners go on to create additional episodes for the next competition, where they'll face off against new pilots. Fame and glory go to those producers whose series last the longest without being canceled by the audience.

According to Variety, Black will produce the FX show, along with Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, who run the monthly competitions and who cowrote the legendary failed 1999 action-spoof pilot ''Heat Vision and Jack,'' directed by Ben Stiller and starring Black as a fugitive astronaut who rides a talking motorcycle (voiced by Owen Wilson). Of course, FX has committed only to a pilot episode itself, meaning the show might well face the same fate suffered by ''Heat Vision and Jack'' and most of the fare created for the monthly competitions. (''There is no way any of this stuff would be on the networks,'' Harmon tells Variety. ''It's all very dark and crazy and twisted.'') At least those minishows live on via the Internet; if you want to see what FX's show might look like, you can check out past submissions (titles include ''Kicked in the Nuts'' and ''I Love Vaginas'') at the Channel 101 website.
