Thank you for the illuminating piece on Ray Harryhausen (''The Beastie Boy''). I too took great delight in the skeleton sword fight while watching ''Jason and the Argonauts'' during seventh-grade literature class. Directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson aren't the only ones who owe Mr. Harryhausen a debt of gratitude. The geniuses at Pixar paid him homage by naming the fanciest restaurant in ''Monsters, Inc.'''s Monstropolis Harryhausen's. It's where Mike took Celia on their big date. I greatly enjoyed your article on Ray Harryhausen. His films are a lesson that George Lucas seems to have forgotten and Stephen Sommers (''Van Helsing,'' yikes!) never learned: Less is more. CHAZ TRUOG chaztruog@yahoo.com Minneapolis

I was shocked when I read that The N, a network ballsy enough to show ''Degrassi: The Next Generation,'' might not air the episodes regarding Manny's pregnancy (News & Notes). I was especially amazed that they would blame the decision on tone, while they're showing a story line in which Terri lands in the hospital after a beating from her boyfriend. I have enjoyed this show because it has tackled difficult topics and I cannot thank The N enough for giving me the chance to fall in love with it. However, if these episodes never air, I will lose respect for a network I thought was willing to take chances. ANNIE CLARK djphob@cinci.rr.com Cincinnati
