Last year's Emmy show, which seemed to have more hosts than winners, was apparently just an experiment. This year, the awards gala will go back to just one proven host: Garry Shandling. The comic, who was one of the 11 emcees on Fox's Emmy telecast last year, hosted the show by himself four years ago, which was also the last time the broadcast aired on ABC. (It rotates each year among Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC). Shandling's 2000 show was the highest-rated Emmycast in 14 years, Emmy producer Don Mischer noted in a statement. Shandling, who has also hosted the Grammys three times, has an Emmy of his own, earned as a writer on his classic HBO series ''The Larry Sanders Show.''
Nominations for this year's Emmys will be announced July 15. ABC will air the ceremony on Sept. 19 from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. That gives Shandling two months to rest up. ''This is perfect for me, since I just recuperated from the last time,'' he joked in a statement. ''I can hardly wait to get that real sense of existence you can only get from being on live television four straight hours.''
