The Deal Report

MOVIES Mark Wahlberg digs ''In Cold Blood,'' the 1965 true-crime classic by Truman Capote that -- take it from the Deal Report -- if you read when you're young, will make you spend the rest of your life worrying that your family will get murdered in the night by crazy transients. Now Wahlberg's up for playing one of those crazy guys, Perry Smith (played by Robert Blake in the 1967 film version), in a movie about Capote from writer-director Douglas McGrath (''Emma''). ''McGrath's script, which is about the writing of ''In Cold Blood,'' [is] amazing,'' Wahlberg says. Sandra Bullock is negotiating to play ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' author Harper Lee (a Capote childhood bud). And a dude named Toby Jones, the voice of Dobby in the second Harry Potter movie, will play Capote. At one point, ''it was supposed to be Sean Penn'' playing Capote, says Wahlberg--whaaat?... Jodie Foster's new thriller, ''Flight Plan,'' sounds pretty cool. It's set on a jet. ''Jodie's daughter disappears, so she has to find her on this plane which is, you know, the size of a city,'' says ''Traffic'''s Erika Christensen, who plays ''your friendly flight attendant! Would you like some more coffee?'' No, but how about some mini pretzels?

TELEVISION Dave Chappelle will bring us two more seasons of ''Chappelle's Show,'' because Comedy Central cut him a deal for a reported, oh, $50 million!

STAGE ''In the garden, growth has its seasons,'' says Peter Sellers as Chance the gardener (a.k.a. Chauncey Gardiner) in 1979's magical ''Being There,'' which may now bloom on Broadway as either a straight-up play or a musical. Producer David Permut (''Face/Off'') is steering the way. ''It's such a timely movie, with the media and Chauncey Gardiner and his adage of 'I like to watch,''' Permut says. ''I think we all like to watch. We all have an umbilical cord tied to the TV set, don't we?'' As Chance says, as long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden.
