Why we can't wait to see ''Meet the Fockers''
RELEASE DATE Dec. 22
WHY WE CAN'T WAIT The trailer has kept us in stitches all summer, but so has the sight of Barbra Streisand, absent from the screen for eight years, back in her A Star Is Born-era curly coif.
THE PREMISE Now that Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) has survived meeting fearsome future father-in-law Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), it's time for the conservative, WASP-y Byrnes clan to meet Greg's liberal, Jewish parents (played by Dustin Hoffman and Streisand, pictured).
SOURCE It's a sequel, of course, to 2000's Meet the Parents
THE BACK STORY This is the first movie Streisand has appeared in since 1987's Nuts that she didn't also write, produce, and direct. It's also the Funny Girl's first comedy in a quarter century and her first supporting role since, well, ever. As recently as March, director Jay Roach expected her to turn him down.
BURNING QUESTION After four years and at least nine screenwriters, has all the funny been revised out of the screenplay? Or is there enough left for a third movie?
COME FOR Mother Focker, who else? Hello again, gorgeous.
STAY FOR The reunion of Wag the Dog comedy team De Niro and Hoffman
