Michael Mann?s tensely funny and alive L.A. night-world thriller is, in its way, a very high-stakes buddy movie. Vincent(Tom Cruise), a hitman, hires Max (Jamie Foxx), a mellow cabbie who becomes his hostage, driver, and wary pupil in Nietzschean self-glory. The film generates suspense by dividing our sympathies in clever and unexpected ways.
