Proving the whole is often more than just the sum of its parts, ''Alien Vs. Predator'' dominated the box office this weekend, premiering with $38.3 million, according to studio estimates.

That makes it not only the No. 1 film of the weekend, but also the biggest "Alien" opening ever (beating "Alien 3'''s $19.4 million) and the biggest "Predator" opening ever (topping the original's $12 million). Who needs Sigourney and Arnold? Apparently not young male fans, who flocked to the film despite its lack of human starpower.

Second place went to "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," which earned $23 million over the three-day portion of the weekend, right in line with the $22.9 million debut of the first "Diaries" film in 2001. Since "PD2" opened on Wednesday it has grossed an strong $37.2 million.

Tom Cruise's "Collateral" slipped only 35 percent in its second weekend to $16 million, thanks to its positive reviews and word of mouth. The mostly adult draw has earned $52.4 million in 10 days.

Rounding out the top five were "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie," which debuted with $9.4 million, and "The Bourne Supremacy," which fell 42 percent to $8.3 million, bringing its total to a fantastic $139.4 million. No doubt Universal execs are trying to find a way to bring Matt Damon back a third time.
