FOR THE DEFENSE An unnerved Love responded to the charges against her

For once, Courtney Love seemed to have little to say, other than ''yes'' or ''no.'' Those were the responses she gave to Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Dennis Mulcahy on Friday during her arraignment on an assault charge. Love pleaded not guilty to the accusation that she attacked a woman with a flashlight and a bottle on April 25 at the home of her former boyfriend and manager, Jim Barber. Mulcahy set a court date of Oct. 7 and barred Love from contacting or coming within 100 yards of her alleged victim, Reuters reports.

Outside the courthouse, Love was her usual outspoken self. Referring to her summer of ongoing legal woes -- including another pending case in Beverly Hills involving a charge of felony possession of painkillers without a prescription, a charge Love has denied -- Love told reporters, ''I'm scared. It's scary.'' The rocker added, ''I just want to play music, and being in that court and having a judge say, 'the state of California, versus me,' it's just scary.''
