Last Comic Standing

(NBC) 8-9 PM Premiered Aug. 30

It's no longer a plain ol' talent show. ''This is all the comics who made the house [in season 2] and all the comics who made the house last year competing for a major $250,000 grand prize,'' says Peter Engel, exec producer of the Emmy-nominated series. ''So it's total stand-up -- there's no living together, no talent search, no judges.'' Yup, America votes and decides which performer gets the boot each week. (The format change is due to NBC's last-minute decision to put ''Comic'' on its fall schedule.)

By the way, has anyone heard from season 1 winner Dat Phan? Says Engel, ''He did an [episode of] 'The West Wing,' he did a movie at Paramount, and his rates have skyrocketed!'' Well, we're guessing he had nowhere to go but up.
