At the end of season 2, he left his job for his wife, then his wife left him. Yes, Jack (Anthony LaPaglia) has hit hard times in this rare detective show that delves into its characters as much as its crimes. ''He's going to have to decide: move to Chicago and chase his wife or stay in New York and fight a custody battle,'' says exec producer Hank Steinberg. ''He's going to have to get his job back, which might cause conflict.'' Particularly since that means either vacating Vivian (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) from his old gig or reporting to her in a tricky reversal of fortune. Jack's return may also not be the healthiest thing for Sam (Poppy Montgomery). ''Whether she pines for Jack, I'm not sure yet,'' Steinberg says. ''But his being there will definitely make complications for her.''
