In the finale's machine-gun battle, one of the regulars, it will be revealed, was critically wounded. Also, Kim Raver's Zambrano leaves to remarry Jimmy Doherty (Raver's heading to ''24''). Wait...a happy ending on ''Third Watch''? ''I didn't want to do another, you know, Kim gets blown in half,'' explains exec producer Ed Bernero.
Josh Stewart joins the cast as a rookie cop (''He reminds us of a young Sean Penn in 'Colors'''), and Aidan Quinn does four episodes as a foil for Cruz (Tia Texada). Overall, Bernero promises a new ''suspense-thriller'' tone for his drama -- and hopes the latest time switch (from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m.) will be the last on his ''Watch'': ''We've had seven time slots in six years. Most people don't want to criticize the network, but I do. I've always felt that if the show got more support, it would be huge.''
