''Passion'' sets first-week DVD sales record. With 9 million sold, it tops the record for live-action discs set by the ''Lord of the Rings'' movies

Some scholars consider The Lord of the Rings a Christian allegory, but on DVD, Christ figure Frodo doesn't hold a candle to the real thing. The Passion of the Christ set a record for first-week sales of a live-action home video, outdistancing the Tolkien epics, according to Passion distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Fox says that the video has sold 9 million copies of Mel Gibson's biblical epic since its release last week, 4.1 million of them on the first day alone. (The first-day record belongs to an animated movie, Finding Nemo, which sold 8 million copies out of the box.) Passion was also the top-grossing renter its first week, Video Store magazine reports, taking in $9.45 million at the rental counter. Not bad for a disc with absolutely no extras; imagine how a special-edition Passion DVD would do.
