The September box office slump could be broken this weekend, thanks to the arrival of the video-game-inspired sequel Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Two years ago, the first Resident Evil film opened to $17.7 million. With a high 2,800 theater count and nothing in the way of real competition, the sequel will easily claim the No. 1 spot with a debut of around $18 million.
Kim Basinger also returns to multiplexes this weekend with her new thriller Cellular. It’ll definitely be hurt by Resident Evil, however, and should see an opening in the $7 million range.
The rest of the top five should be filled out by last week’s three biggest grossers. Jet Li’s Hero will slip to $5 million, while Without A Paddle and Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid will each earn another $4 million. Okay, so maybe that slump isn’t COMPLETELY over just yet.
