The Must List

10 Things EW loves: Week of Sept. 17, 2004

Directed by Zhang Yimou, with cinematography by Christopher Doyle, this sweeping Chinese martial-arts epic is a rapturous exercise in visual storytelling.

Ribald but never raunchy, these marvelous cartoons from the iconic men's mag were picked by Hef himself.

DVD
3. ROSS McELWEE
He's as sly and funny as Michael Moore — but with a smaller ego and a bigger heart. Check out 1986's Sherman's March (on DVD) before catching his latest doc, Bright Leaves. storytelling.

4. GELLHORN, by Caroline Moorehead
A fine bio that paints journo/Hemingway ex Martha Gellhorn as a modern woman years ahead of her time.

5. ANYWHERE, Keren Ann
We have every reason to hate this CD of breathy confessionals: It's pretty, delicate, and so freakin' twee. But we don't. So sue us.

TV
6. NICK LACHEY guesting on Charmed
The bewitching WB hit keeps the hunky guest stars coming as Mr. Jessica Simpson steps out from behind his wife to romance Alyssa Milano's Phoebe for six episodes.

On the two-disc reissue of the late great's Grace, this previously unreleased gem makes us miss him even more.

DVD
9. THE PASSION OF THE JEW
The South Park gang is always at their bilious est when tackling taboo topics — like, say, Jesus' death in this cabrous skewering, now on DVD, of Mel Gibson's biblical tale.

10 FILM SCHOOL
IFC's swell new ''Action!'' series follows four NYU students struggling to make their first films. It's The Real World meets Project Greenlight.
