It's nearly ''Doom'''s-day. Next month, Universal will begin shooting a film based on the popular video game series, according to Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. The studio is in talks with The Rock to play a leading role in the film; already cast is Karl Urban, recently onscreen as the assassin in The Bourne Supremacy and best known as warrior prince Eomer in the Lord of the Rings movies. Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle 2 the Grave) will direct the film, which is due out next August.
Doom will be full of backstory. In the screenplay, inspired by ''Doom3,'' Urban's character is John Grimm, leader of a commando team, who fights alien demons while confronting the organization behind the deaths of his parents. Also, lotsa stuff will get blown up.
