''Like a devoted puppy, I will follow that man to the ends of the earth.'' That's what Julia Roberts told Entertainment Weekly earlier this summer, referring to Mike Nichols, who directed her in the upcoming Oscar-baiting romantic drama Closer. Now, Variety reports, she'll be following him to a romantic comedy called Seven-Year Switch. As the title suggests, it's a gender-reversed update of Billy Wilder's classic 1955 comedy The Seven Year Itch, with a little bit of Sliding Doors and It's a Wonderful Life thrown in.

Nichols, who won an Emmy last week for directing HBO's Angels in America, would direct Roberts in the role of a woman seven years into a relationship who learns what her life would have been like if she'd never chosen her beau. No word on when the Columbia Pictures project would shoot; Roberts hinted in an August interview in Newsweek that she'd be taking a long maternity leave after her twins are born. ''I'm not planning anything,'' she said then. ''You just kind of play it as it comes. I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?''
